1. Read chapter 10 and write about context, style and class. Create an example based on the information you analyzed.
Strategy: Write a brief explanation of these factors and provide an example to illustrate it, check the information given in your textbook.
Context.- Context reflects where the language is used, the context can differ from one situation toother. The context could be formal or casual. Also the vocabulary differs according to the context.
Style.- Is adapted according to the audience for example if the interview is between two strangers careful style or vernacular can be found. People use more vernacular language when describe a situation where they had been in danger. Vernacular style is associated with a comfortable, relay and familiarscenario.
Class.- Depending on the social group, the vernacular pronunciation will be presented. A low frequency of vernacular pronunciation o a higher frequency of standard pronunciation will signal if the speaker belongs to a high social class. Stylistic variation differs according the social groups. The more sophisticated group, the more formal speech is used. Also according the socialbackground the class will be reflected.
Example according to the context
1. A couple at their house
A couple is talking about their divorce they offend each other and argue without control. We can see trough this example that the context used is rude.
2. At a lawyer´s office
The same couple talks about their divorce with respect to each other because there is the lawyer. At this example we cansee the opposite because someone strange is present.
Example according to the style
1. Two friends talking
Friend 1 Hi, How are you?
Friend 2 I’m fine
Friend 1 How was your exam?
Friend 2 It was hard, but fortunately I got an A
Friend 1 Congratulations
The style used between friends is relaxed and informal, they have confidence each other.
3. Friend 1 with the teacher
TeacherMiss Alvarado. Come here!
Student yes, Miss Lopez
Teacher I want to show you your grades. These are A, C,B,C
Student Oh I don’t know what to say. I will try to improve
Teacher You should work hard otherwise you will be in trouble
Student Ok, Miss Lopez
With this example we can see that the style is different, the student talk with respect and consideration to the teacher.
Exampleaccording to the class
