How to teach effectively

Dr Mike Clough, Associate professor of Curriculum and Instruction, says that teachers must engage learners mentally soas to discover what they are thinking. Teachers must get the most out of the students. The challenge in a classroom is to get all the studentsinvolved and engaged. Here we have some of the techniques used in the video to accomplish an effective class.

1. Try to get all the learners toparticipate by using techniques that help students express their ideas and what they are thinking. In this case, Mr Clough suggests the whiteboard, which can be useful even for a 200 hundred student class.

2. Ask extended questions. Yes or no questions are not really welcome in aneffective teaching environment.

3. Wait Time 1" …which means after he asks a question, he wait with his arms out in an inviting manner, notthreatening.

4. "Wait Time 2"… which causes the student to elaborate and other students to respond. It has shown to be very effective. Also, WaitTime is also a teacher’s friend because it gives the teacher time to think about how to respond to their answers.

If you wanted to make onesimplistic statement about teaching, it would be: You’ve got to engage the learner mentally and find out what they’re thinking. That’s not easy to do,but the payoff is tremendous. Because they see that learning is complex and teaching is complex and it becomes a joy to be part of the process.
