Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was born in February 12, 1809 and died in April 15, 1865. Became the 16th President of the United States from March 1861. He successfully led the country through itsgreatest constitutional, military and moral crisis the American Civil War by preserving the Union by force finish slavery and promoting economic modernization.

Reared in a poor family on the western frontier, hewas mostly self educated. He became a country lawyer, an Illinois state legislator, and a one-term member of the United States House of Representatives but failed in two attempts at a seat in theUnited States Senate. He was an affectionate, though often absent, husband and father of four children.
Emancipation Proclamation

Lincoln presents the first draft of the Emancipation Proclamationto his cabinet. Painted by Carpenter in 1864. Lincoln maintained that his power to end slavery was limited by the Constitution. He expected the eventual extinction of slavery would result frompreventing its expansion into new U.S. territory. He also sought to persuade the states to accept compensated emancipation in return for their prohibition of slavery only in Washington. Lincoln believed thatcurtailing slavery in this manner would economically erase it, as envisioned by the Founding Fathers. President Lincoln rejected two emancipation attempts by Maj. Gen. John C. Frémont in August, 1861and by Maj. Gen. David Hunter in May, 1862 on the grounds that it would upset the frontier states loyal to the Union
