Rock music is a genre of popular music that entered the mainstream in the 1960s. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, rhythm and blues,country music and also drew on folk music, jazz and classical music. The sound of rock often revolves around the electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, and keyboard instruments such asHammond organ, piano, or, since the late 60s, synthesizers. Rock music typically uses simple unsyncopated rhythms in a 4/4 meter, with a repetitive snare drum back beat on beats two andfour Guitar solos feature prominently in rock music; however, keyboard, saxophone and blues-style harmonica are also sometimes used as soloing instruments. In its "purest form", it "hasthree chords, a strong, insistent back beat, and a catchy melody"
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, rock music developed different subgenres. When it was blended with folk music itcreated folk rock, with blues to create blues-rock and with jazz, to create jazz-rock fusion. In the 1970s, rock incorporated influences from soul, funk, and Latin music. Also in the1970s, rock developed a large number of subgenres, such as soft rock, glam rock, heavy metal, hard rock, progressive rock, and punk rock

TheBeatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, which are often recognized as the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed act in popular music. From 1962,the group consisted of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals). Rooted in skiffleand 1950s rock and roll, the group later worked in many genres ranging from folk rock to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways.
