The SUBJECT COMPLEMENT (Cs)
What isa subject complement?

The complement (Cs) is the element that describes, defines or explains the subject in a clause. It can have different forms; it can be a noun, adjective, finite, non-finite and in some cases a prepositional phrase. The city is in Chaos

One of the most important characteristics of the Cs is that it uses linking verbs (intransitive verbs), they connect the subject withthe complement.

This complement completes the meaning of the subject. Some linking verbs are: current and resulting verbs.
Appear, become, seem, feel, grow, act, look, taste, smell, sound, get, be (in all forms)

Examples of sentences with subject complements:
Nph Vph NPh
The lake was a tranquil pool.
S V C
"Was", is alinking verb, which links the complement "tranquil pool" to the subject "lake."

Nph Vph Adj.Ph
The lake is tranquil.
S V C
"Tranquil" is an adjective linked to the subject through the verb "is."

Position: The subject complement always occurs after a linking or copular verb in the SVC clause pattern. The most common copular ( linking) verb inEnglish is the verb be used as a main verb,

seem
The students are intelligent
appear
look

He was a radiologist before he became a full-time yoga instructor.
S V C A
Your homemade chili smells delicious.
We can recognize the linking verb in a clausewhen it can be replaced by the verb “to be” Example:

The food tastes delicious = The food is delicious.
I taste the food in the event. / I am the food X (no possible) therefore taste in this case is not a linking verb. And taste is a transitive verb
The OBJECT COMPLEMENT FUNCTION (Co)
What is an object complement?
The object complement is the word or group of words that describe, define or explain the object of the clause. The OBJECT COMPLEMENT (Co) structure is one of the 7 basic sentence types in English. An object complement follows and modifies or refers to a direct object. It can be a noun or adjective or any word acting as a noun or adjective. It can also be a finite clause or non-finite clause.

(The noun "Vice President" complements the direct object "Mr. Smith"; the adjective "happy" complements the object "him.") But of course when you identify the clause (finite or non-finite as a unit, you do not need to analyze inside it)

S V O C
(The participle "excited" complements the object "children.")
The Co structure is used with only a few verbs, mainly verbs that express naming, thinking, or transforming and causing in some way.
