The isle of Majorca is located in the Mediterranean Sea, near of the Autonomous Community of Comunidad Valenciana. One of these islands has a natural protected reserve, Cabrera. The other islands are important due to other characteristics like the sport or the tourism, as we will see in this project.
We go to analyze the isle of Majorca and its market tourism characteristics.However, we can also learn about how make a research of a complete travel and the main information about the market of a specific region.
In the external analysis, we will analyze the general environment, the main competitors and the demand of the offers in this isle. In the internal analysis, we will analyze the tourist resources, the built environment and the operational sector.
TheSWOT analysis we will se the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that the isle of Majorca has as a tourism destination.
The fourth point in this project concerns about the DMOs of Majorca, the main websites in which we can find all about a tourism destination.
The final points are the innovations of our tourism destination and our point of view about the future of the chosentourism destination, the isle of Majorca.
Finally we will elaborate a conclusion with all these points, characteristics and data about Majorca.
1. General Environment
1. Political‐legal factors
Ciutat de Mallorca or Palma is the capital of the four islands composing the Balear Islands. This Autonomous Community, with Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera is located to the Eastof Spain, in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Island of Majorca is divided in three areas: Palma, Manacor and Inca. And the most important towns there are: Alaró, Artá, Felanitx and Valldemosa.
There is a Government for the island called Majorca Insular Council with responsibility for culture, roads, railways and municipal administration. However, some issues related toTourism and subsidiaries sectors depend on the Central Government in Madrid, ran by the Socialist Party.
In a few months, in 2011, there will be autonomous elections again and both wings are having the same share of votes. For the moment is not known who and how will be in the power for the next four years.
Nowadays Balear Islands is governed by a coalition of parties headedby the Socialist Francesc Antich. However, this share of power has not been like this in the past. The Popular Party, ruled by Jaume Matas has been in the power for many years. Despite the great support he got after many years in the power, Matas was forced to leave Politics due to corruption issuescame up,The party ruling nowadays have also found problems with corruption, so Antich had to takethe decision of leaving out of the coalition the Majorcan Union.
There are 4 levels of policies in Majorca:
-Those coming from Brussels
-Those coming from Madrid
-Those coming from Majorca
Moreover, these policies are sometimes an act of pressure from stakeholders such as ACH or Sustainable Tourism Foundation.
General Tourist Policies are doneby the Balearic Government, which is set in Mallorca, through the Conselleria de Turisme i Treball of Balear Islands. However, each city or town in Majorca has its own town council with its own tourist policies. For instance, IMTUR is the Municipal Tourism Institute of the City of Palma.
