Metric Mass (or weight) Measurement

Metric Conversions

As you move to the right, you multiply by 10. As you move to theleft, you divide by 10.
Do it With Exponents
Using exponents is another way to convert metric measurements. Multiply a given unit by 10, raised to either a positive ornegative power. The base is always 10. The exponent is determined both by the number of places that you move and the direction of the move.
Conversions and WordProblems
Measurement conversions appear in many types of word problems. When solving a word problem, follow these steps:
1. Read the entire word problem.
2.Determine what the problem is asking you to find out.
3. Determine what you know.
4. Set-up the equation (remember that many words can be translated into mathsymbols, for example "of" means "multiply" and "is" means "equal").
5. Solve the problem.
6. Finally, re-read number 2 and make sure that you answered the question.
