Earth Day
The celebration of "Earth Day" seeks to create common awareness to universal problems such as pollution, conservation of biodiversity and other
environmental concerns.
Behind thisannual celebration there is no centralized organization, but many NGOs, governments and are responsible for organizing activities around the world to remember the need to protect the environment.

With the industrial revolution and the development of factories, cities became large producers of waste. In the mid 30's and again in early 50, the Cuyahoga River in Ohio caught fire dueto industrial waste discharged from factories. Similar events occurred in Michigan, New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Pollution from factories, the indiscriminate use of pesticides and forestclearing for the establishment of industrial crops, became a time bomb that the world would not notice until 1962.
In 1962, Rachel Carson, American scientist, published the book "Silent Spring". Thispublication drew world attention to the damage caused to human health and the environment from the misuse of a powerful pesticide.
In her book, Carson meticulously documented long-term dangers ofindiscriminate use of pesticides. "Silent Spring" awakened environmental consciousness in the American public and led to an unprecedented national effort to safeguard the nature of the chemicaldestruction.
In 1968, when the crew of Apollo 8 reached the Moon and had first images of the planet in orbit, the world saw through the media, the image of the Earth, a planet beautiful, unique anddelicate.
