The FIFA World Cup ™ South Africa 2010 (FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 ™ in English) was the nineteenth edition of the World Cup. It began on June 11 and ended on July 11, marking the first time that this tournament was played in Africa and the fifth time in the southern hemisphere.
204 of the 208 national associations attached to the FIFA registered to participate in theclassification process conducted between mid 2007 and late 2009 in order to determine the 32 teams in the NCAA Tournament, beating the mark of 197 Tournament participants anterior.
The championship consisted of two phases: the first, were formed eight groups of four teams each advancing to the next round the top two in each group. The sixteen finalists faced later in qualifying matches, reachingthe two teams who contested the final at the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg.
Before the tournament, South Africa made a millionaire investment to be able to receive one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Nearly 2 million tickets were offered for sale to attend the 64 matches, two to be played at 10 stadiums located throughout the country, of which half were new. In preparation forthe event, the host country previously hosted the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 in the cities of Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Rustenburg.
In this World Cup teams returned after several years of absence: North Korea, which was not involved since 1966, Honduras and New Zealand since 1982, Algeria since 1986, and Greece since 1994. These teams were joined by Slovakia, whicheliminated Italy in the group stage, and Serbia. The last two teams had already participated in previous World Cup events, but with teams broken, Czechoslovakia in case of the first, and Yugoslavia and later Serbia and Montenegro in the case of the latter.
Having passed the first round, the tournament was marked by a strong predominance of defensive play of the teams, as the 101 goals scoredwere the fewest gained during the group stage since the participants are thirty-two. CONMEBOL selections became the main mastering the round, from its five teams to the second, with only one loss in fifteen games played. On the other hand, Europe and Africa disappointed: six of the thirteen European teams and only one of the six Africans went to the next phase. Within highlighted removed the twoprevious World Cup finalists Italy and France, South Africa, which became the first host nation in history that fails to pass the second stage. After the consecration of Spain, this World Cup was first played outside Europe in which a European team champion, also was the first time since 1998 that a team won without previous World Cups under his belt, as well as first time since 1978 that two teams in World Cups without clashed in the final, and the first timesince 1962 in Europe and South America do not alternate world champions since the previous edition was also European champion
