The School Jumper
If transferring from school to school was a video game, I would be a high scorer. I know there are a couple peoplewho could beat me, but I would definitely rank up high on the scores list. By the time I graduate senior year, I will have attended seven schools in three states during the course of my K-12 years. Ihave experienced just about every type of school system there is. I have been in year around, traditional, block, 8 and 7 class schedules, both public and private, you name it. From AP EnglishLiterature to Children’s Theater I could give an accurate evaluation on every program a school could offer. My question is: Why have I, or students like me, not been given the opportunity to share ouropinions?
The education system in America spans over 50 states, 13,809 school districts with 3,219,458 teachers educating the next generation of great thinkers. The fact of the matter is, even with themanpower, the US is falling dramatically behind other nations in our education. When our education falls behind, so does our nation as a whole. So I will restate my question: Why have I, or students likeme, not been given the opportunity to share our opinions? Our education system needs reform, and will always need reform. Why are the students not active participants in this reform?
Many wouldargue that students are not responsible, mature, intelligent or knowledgeable enough to partake in reform debates. To this, I would have to agree. There are absolutely a high percentage of students whoare not responsible, mature or even intelligent enough to reconstitute an educational system. I would argue though that someone will be hard pressed to find a public school student who is notknowledgeable in how his or her school is run. None know better than the actual students.
