Protected Areas in Mexico
Protected Areas represent in Mexico the most important instrument of environmental policyfrom a juridical point of view, as far as the conservation of biodiversity is concerned. They are land or aquatic areas of the national territory representing the various ecosystems, in which theoriginal environment has not been altered and which generate increasingly recognized and enhanced ecological benefits. They are established through a presidential decree and the activities that can becarried out within their territory are settled by the "Ley General del Equilibrio Ecológico y Protección al Ambiente" (General Law on Ecological Balance and Protection of the Environment). They aresubject to special protection, conservation, recovery, and development regimes, according to the categories established by the Law.
The National Commission of Protected Areas manages at the moment 164federal natural areas covering an area of over 23 millions of hectares.
Areas with one or more ecosystems important for their landscape beauty, their scientific, educational, andrecreational value, their historical value, the presence of flora and fauna, their aptitude towards the development of tourism, or for other similar reasons of general interest.
Areasrepresenting one or more ecosystems which have not been altered by the human action or which require protection and recovery measures. They house representative species of the national biodiversity,among which endemic and endangered species.
