No To Marijuana Legalization
There are so many opinions and views throughout the United States about the legalization of marijuana.” Marijuana is a common namefor the Hemp plant or Cannabis; however, marijuana is also known as pot, grass and even weed”(W.F., 09/26/06). People that are against legalization believe that if marijuana was legalized it would just be used so everybody could get high everyday and it would just the downfall of society throughout the country. Also there will be an increase of society that will end up getting addicted. This peoplewill end up with no money and they will have no other option, but to do illegal acts which will increase the crime rate in the U.S. However, there have been continuous debates about legalizing marijuana. This essay will provide different points of view that will allow you to make an informed decision.
People that are in favor in legalizing marijuana might think that smoking marijuana won’tcause serious health problems like those caused by tobacco or alcohol. They also think that they would help the economy because once it is legal to buy taxes would be enforced on the sales. “Aside from recreational use, cannabis has several industrial and commercial uses; as over 25,000 products can be made from the crop” (Joe Messerli, 08/06/11). In consideration one of the reasons that people wantto legalize weed is to feel one of life’s little pleasures. Marijuana can be used by cancer patients to help alleviate the pain. These are just excuses for some people to legally use marijuana as an over the counter drug to feel high and act stupid.
On the other hand people that don’t want this drug to become legalized might think about future generations; and how this decision will affect theirchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A lot of people think that “Marijuana is often used as a stepping stone drug, leading to heroin, cocaine, and other harder drugs”(Joe Messerli, 08/06/11). Once, someone begins to use marijuana they will get hooked on the feeling of ecstasy or the high that this drug gives them. At some point it will not be enough and they will end up using andbecoming addicted to other drugs that are considered more dangerous. This would mean an immediate increase of the crime rate in the states where marijuana is legalized. We can all imagine that if cannabis is legalized drug will reach our children like now a day’s cigarettes and alcohol are finding their way. “Marijuana is currently the leading cause of substance dependence other than alcohol in theU.S. since 2008”(Dr. Robert L. DuPont, 04/20/10). It is hard to find out a whether marijuana alone causes cancer because many people smoke cigarettes and use other drugs at the same time. We all know that smoking tobacco can cause cancer in the lungs, but what we don’t know is that “marijuana smoke contains some of the same ingredients in tobacco smoke that can also cause emphysema and cancer. Alsothe studies of human lung tissue that had been exposed to marijuana smoke over a long period of time in a laboratory showed cellular changes called metaplasia that are considered to be precancerous. Laboratory tests have shown that the tars from marijuana smoke have produced tumors when applied to animal skin”(Schick Shadel Hospital. 09/26/06). Another fact that I learned about marijuana is that itis very rare that an individual only uses marijuana and no other drug.
