Do any of these names sound familiar to you: Ted Williams, Sonia Sotomayor, Denzel Washington, or Jennifer Lopez? What do all these names have in common?They are all part of an underrepresented race that struggled to survive in their darkest days of poverty. Both Sonia Sotomayor and Jennifer Lopez were born to poor Puerto Rican families who moved toNew York in hope for a better life. Today, Jennifer Lopez is considered the face of Hispanic culture which is thriving in the United States. Meanwhile, Sonia Sotomayor embraced Latinos’ presence inAmerica by becoming the first Latina judge appointed to the United States Supreme Court Justice. Ted Williams was once a homeless drunk who literally “talked” for money. Denzel Washington was a troublekid who hung out with juveniles. After a YouTube video went viral on the internet, Ted Williams became an overnight sensation, literally getting offers from big-brand companies in hope of hiring Tedas their spokesperson. While Denzel Washington spent most of his childhood at the Boys and Girls Club, eventually to leave his trouble life in order to become a famous actor. Each of these people wasinspired to achieve despite having no connections to a so-call “high-class educated person” Brooks described.
While I have to agree with David Brooks about the higher-class generation being morelikely to succeed, I untimely disagree with his statement of “outperforming” the lower to middle-class generation. As a capitalist nation, every person, including immigrates who live in the UnitedStates, can and will compete to survive because we are all given the opportunity to survive. The government gives every child the right to receive a free education. There are federal and state programs thathelp people attend college. There are also programs that will help take care of a child. And with the rise of several independent programs, opportunities are open to anybody with the ambition to...
