NUMBER THE STARS

CHAPTER 1 - “WHY ARE YOU RUNNING?”

Ellen and Annemarie were walking to school with Kirsti, her little sister. They wanted to practice running for their athletic meet on Friday. They began to run to the corner street called Osterbrogade and the little Kirsti left behind. At he corner, the german soldiers shouted them to stop. They had helmets, tall shiny boots, two rifles intheir hands.. They asked the girls why were they running. The girls told them that they were racing to practice for the school race. One of the soldiers was like a giraffe, because he was tall and he had a long neck. One of them said Kirsti that she was pretty, like his little girl. The two soldiers told them to go home and no running anymore because they seemed like hoodlums. The three girlswent home but they didn´t want to tell their mothers what happened. When they arrived, Ellen´s mother was at Annemarie´s mother house having coffee together. But really, there had been no real coffee in Copenhagen since the beginning of the Nazi occupation and not even any real tea, only water flavored with herbs. Finally, the girls told them the incident that they had with the soldiers and finallyMrs Rosen ordered the girls to walk a different way to school.

CHAPTER 2 – “WHO IS THE MAN WHO RIDES PAST?”

That night, Annemarie told her sister, Kirsti a fairy tale. It was about the little mermaid but Kirsti didn´t liket it, she liked about kings and queens. Afterwards, Annemarie told about the king Christian X, the king of Denmark. He always came from the palace on his horse, Jubille,greeting his people, and her older sister, Lise took her to stand on the sidewalk to wave to King Christian. Her father told her that the german soldier asked about the king, he didn´t know and he dididn´t understand why the king wasn´t have bodyguard. He answered that all of Denmark was his bodyguard.. His Papa told her about Lisa and Peter Nielsen, his husband. They had married very younger, abouteighteen and Annemarie nad Kirsti had a brother for the first time. They talked about the history of Norway, Norwegian, Holland and Sweden and the problems with the soldiers. But at that moment, King Christian X was still alive, he was old, but not her sister Lisa, she died in an accident two weeks before her weeding. Nobody forgot her, and Peter never married again.

CHAPTER 3 - “WHERE ISMRS.HIRSCH?

The days of September passed and the winter is coming, the nights were so terribly in Copenhagen. The problem was that there was no fuel and electricity so they used candles and stoves.
Annemarie and Ellen walked to school together, they were neightborhood and her mothers were friends, they took coffee together. That day, before went to school Kirsti broke the bottom of her jacketso her mother told her to buy the bottom at Mrs.Hirsch´s shop. When they went at the shop, it was closed, they think that Mrs.Hirsch was sick or perhaps they went on holidays. At the door there was a note written in German. At night, Annemarie´s mother wanted her to get up because it was Peter at her house. She was very surprise because it was night and in Copenhagen had a curfew and nobody wereallowed out after eight o´clock. He told us that he was with much work and in differents places. Peter told us that the Germans have issued orders closing stores run by Jews, they wanted to torment Jewish people. It was the reason, that Mrs.Hirsch shop was closed. All the friends and neightbohoods will take care of them. Peter told Annemarie to take care on Ellen and stay away from the soldiers.CHAPTER 4 – “IT WILL BE A LONG NIGHT”

Annemarie and Ellen were alone in the apartment playing with papel dolls. They imagined the story “Gone with the wind” that her mother had told her. Afterwards, Annemarie´s mother and Kirsti arrived from the fish store. Kirsti was very annoyed because her mother bought a pair of shoes that she didn´t like it, she said that they were fish shoes....
