Additionally to the difference in languagebetween two generations Amy Tan illustrates the different thoughts of honoring their elders. An example that Tan gives from her novel is “My mother took her flesh and put it in the soup. She cookedmagic in the ancient tradition to try to cure her mother this one last time… this is how a daughter honors her mother. It is shou…” (Tan 41). This quote shows how that the mothers generation will doanything, even sacrifice themselves, in a desperate last attempt to save their mother. Another case from the novel is “I once sacrificed my life to keep my parents’ promise…His gold is like yours, it isonly fourteen carats. To Chinese people, fourteen carats isn’t real gold.” (Tan 42). This excerpt from the novel depicts that the mother kept her promise to her parents even though it was difficultwhile her daughter does it the American way, she promises but is never true to her word, she is fake like fourteen carats.
