I. Course Description

This course presents the functions of the majorcomponents of the rooms division within a hotel. The interaction with this division and the other areas of the hotel are explored in relationship to customer service. The course will use the Internet as a research tool, Fidelio software, e mail as means of communication and MS Word and Excel for papers and projects.

II. Objectives

1. Explain the importance of effective communication betweenhousekeeping, the front office, and the engineering and maintenance division.
2. Learn how to effectively check-in and check-out a guest.
3. Learn how to inspect guestroom cleanliness.
4. Apply techniques to develop and improve human resource skills in areas of training, scheduling, motivating, and disciplining.
5. Develop procedures regarding hotel safety and security, with particular emphasis on keycontrol and emergencies;
6. Explain and perform the steps involved in the night audit process;
7. Analyze statistics relevant to establishing room rates, forecasting room availability, budgeting for operations, and evaluating front office operations;
8. Learn to manage inventories of recycled and non-recycled items.
9. Learn common techniques to control expenses in the housekeeping department.III. Ground Rules

It is my responsibility to provide you with the best learning environment, presenting a well- organized class and answering all your questions with respect. I will prepare you with the tools needed to apply those concepts in real life situations.

During class hours, I will incorporate different learning activities to increase your interest in the class. Inorder to have a more active and interesting class, I expect that the students read the assigned chapters before class. To ensure that, students will take a quiz at the beginning of class, every time I assign you a new chapter to read. There are no “Make up” quizzes allowed.


This class is to be an open discussion of the topics (interactive sessions). Only by participating, the instructor canidentify if the student understands the concepts discussed in class. At the same time, the student can contribute with personal experiences, increasing group interaction and class participation. I will, in addition, randomly call on students to respond to specific topics outlined in the material. Be prepared for class!!!


Professionalism:
• The use of smart phones, i-pads, i-pods, laptops,or any other electronic device will be allowed in during class, unless is not used to enhance the class learning experience.


• Students are required to use appropriate attire for class. No caps, sunglasses, extremely short skirts, extremely big pants, sleeveless shirts or tank tops, exposed body piercing (except for traditional ear piercing for women), etc. The professor reserves the rightto dismiss any student that fails to comply with this rule.


Assignments and Projects
• All papers must be submitted in English and must have the following format: 1 inch margin on all sides, double spaced, font point 12. Header must include course name and number, professor name, student name, and assignment title. Two (2) points will be deducted for not using the correct format. Assignmentssubmitted in Spanish will NOT accumulate any points.

• Students must initial the assistance registry in each class.

• Assignments should be submitted on time (by class time on due date) through the assignments tab in Blackboard unless instructed otherwise by the professor.

• Ten (10) percent per class will be deducted from each assignment submitted after the due date. Five (5)...
