TIPS FOR PACE MANAGEMENT

Please follow these recommendations when you must cover more material than normal due to a group / private being behind pace or when you know that you must cover a certainamount of material and it seems that it will be difficult, even when the program is on pace. Keep in mind that it is a lot easier to keep a program on pace than it is to catch up when they arebehind pace.

• Prepare your class well.

If you don’t prepare your class, it will be impossible to cover an appropriate amount of material and make the class productive. A class that is not preparedwell tends to ramble and deviate more, wasting time.

• Know your students’ needs.

If you know what needs your students have, you will be better able to adapt the material to their objectives andspend less time covering material that is not relevant to their needs.

• Opt for quality over quantity.

Rather than trying to cover all the vocabulary, expressions, structures, topics andactivities in the manual quickly (which will almost definitely result in a lower level of quality), choose to cover less material but making sure that the material that is covered is covered well.

Ifyou know that you will not be able to introduce all the language items listed in the manual, choose the ones that are the most essential to achieving the language objectives of the class. Keep in mindthat language items in the manual that do not appear in the Student Book are probably not so essential and could be skipped.

When deciding on what activities to conduct during the class, go foractivities that are more straightforward, rather than activities that take more time to set up, explain, etc. If the manual has various activities that focus on the same goal, conduct only the one thatis most productive or make up your own. Some activities might be a lot of fun to do, but sticking to pace and achieving goals in the class is a lot more important.
