I. INTRODUCTION:
Cataract is a major cause of visual impairment. Today, we are fortunate to live in an era in which the recovery of lost vision due to cataracts, in most cases, is very satisfactory.This monograph is designed to provide the most complete information on how you can cure visual impairment due to cataract. The purpose is to inform and interpret the fundamentals and major advancesof surgery, the risks and benefits of treatment.
HOW DOES THE VISION?
Formed nerve stimulation in the retina are sent to the brain via the optic nerve. The optic nerve is like a "cable" with amillion fibers that connects the retina to the visual cortex of the brain. It is precisely in the cerebral cortex where the ends of integrating the visual process.
WHAT IS A CATARACT?
A cataractis the clouding of the lens. Figure 2 shows the difference between the normal lens transparency and cataract.
When the lens is opaque cataract, light rays cannot reach the retina perfectly defined,are dispersed: therefore sent to the brain images that are fuzzy. Generally the more murky is the lens, causing decreased vision greater.
What is the lens?
The lens is a clear part of the eyethat helps focus light, or an image on the retina. The retina is the light sensitive tissue at the bottom of the eye. (See diagram below.)
In a normal eye, light passes through the transparent lens tothe retina. Upon reaching the retina, light is changed into nerve signals that are sent to the brain.
The lens must be clear for the retina to receive a sharp image. If the lens is cloudy from acataract, the image you see will be blurred.
HOW cataracts develop?
The age-related cataracts develop in two ways:
1. Clumps of protein reduce the clarity of the image that reaches the retina.The lens consists mostly of water and protein. When the protein clumps up, it clouds the lens and reduces the light reaching the retina. The clouding may become severe enough to cause blurred...
