Summary of Well Integrity
Level -1 Training
Well Integrity is a condition that must be
present throughout the life cycle of a well.
Well Integrity is established by installing,
testing andmaintaining the proper seals or
barriers to prevent uncontrolled flow of the
well to the surface or the environment.
A well barrier is any device or element
(such as a fluid column) capable of containpressure and preventing uncontrolled flow
from the well.
A barrier envelope is a set of two or more
elements working together (interlinked) to
contain pressure or prevent uncontrolled
flow fromthe well.
A barrier element (envelope) is accepted as
such if it can be tested, monitored and
maintained. It also should be restored,
repaired or replaced if it fails at any stage of
thelifecycle of the well.
A Primary barrier consists of those elements
in direct contact with a potential outflow
source in the well.
A Secondary Barrier is the ultimate defense
should any of the primaryelements fail.
The loss of any installed barrier may cause a
loss of well integrity, which in turn may lead
to the occurrence of a catastrophic or multicatastrophic SQ and HSE event.

Whenperforming well operations, at least
two independent and tested barriers must be
in place at all times.
All Schlumberger personnel involved in well
operations must have the knowledge and
competency toinstall, operate and maintain
the well barriers required to assure well
integrity.
Everyone is responsible for recognizing and
understanding well integrity risks, beginning
at the job planningstage.
The job supervisor must conduct a HARC
and mitigate all risks of barrier failure to
ALARP before proceeding to R/U or starting
the job.
Everyone involved in well operations has the
authorityand obligation to stop any job that
is considered unsafe or poses an
unacceptable risk, and to communicate to
the proper level for taking action.
