Phycholinguistic Model of Reading

Aspects: * Conceptual abilities * Process strategies *Background knowledge

Reading is an active process, everytime we read something we make a guess, anassumption of the content, the meaning, and then we must confirm or discart this. To achieve reading competence we need to develop special skills in our students. We can view reading as a process and as aproduct. The process is the student comprehending the text, and the product the comprehension itself. We need to develop activities that reward as much for trying as for getting the result, as well asprovide a context for the lesson, because our students need to have some background to relate the new information. The best way to teach reading is provide a conceptually complete reading material,because they not only depend on strategies and knowledge, but also in the nature of the reading.

If our goal is to foster independent learners, the learning environment is really important:
•Should include everyone, teacher and all students.
• Classroom activities should be related to the real world.
• Should be focused on communication and getting our message across.

The teacher hasthree roles:
Teacher: to solve language problems if really necessary
Participant: get involved in discussions, give opinions
Facilitator: intervene just to keep things organized

When preparingreading materials we have to take into account:
* Give students realistic goals
* Prepare material according to their level, interests and skills we want to promote.
* Introduce, model, reinforce,review and then test.
* Provide opportunities to individualization; small groups, individuals.
* Be flexible and dont use the typical exercises. Be creative; brainstorm, discuss before reading.The are the skills we want to promote:
Skimming: to read quickly and get the general idea of the text.
Scanning: seach for specific information.
Thorough Comprehension: to master the total message;...
