POSSESSIVE NOUNS

Possessive nouns are used to show possession (owning, or having). Nombres posesivos se utilizan para mostrar la posesión (propiedad). They are words that would normally be nouns, but are used as adjectives to modify a noun or pronoun. Son palabras que normalmente se los nombran, pero se usan como adjetivos para modificar un sustantivo o un pronombre.

1.- Example: The dog'scollar is too large.
El collar del perro es demasiado grande.

The word "dog's" is the possessive noun. La palabra "perro" es el nombre posesivo. It tells you that the noun "collar" belongs to the dog. Dice que el "collar" pertenece al perro. The dog owns, or possesses the collar. El perro es propietario del collar.

Add 's to the end of a singular noun to make itpossessive. Añadimos 's al final de un sustantivo en singular para que sea posesiva.

2.- Example: The sky's color is changing.
El color del cielo está cambiando.

Add 's to the end of a plural noun that does not end with an s. Añadimos 's al final de un sustantivo en plural que no termina con una s.

3.- Example: We enjoyed the children's play.
Hemos disfrutado deljuego de los niños.

Add only the apostrophe (') to the end of a plural noun that ends with an s. Añada sólo el apóstrofo (') al final de un sustantivo en plural, que termina con un s.

4.- Example: My sisters' names are Kate and Nikki.
Los nombres de mis hermanas son Kate y Nikki.

Optional: If the noun is singular and ends with an s, add 's or Opcional: Si el nombre es singulary termina con una s, añadir `s o sólo agregar el apóstrofo (').

5.- Example: The bus's engine stopped.
El motor del autobús se detuvo.
