PRACTICE n. 5: TESTING OF THERMAL INSULATING MATERIALS

1. INTRODUCTION: In this practice we want to learn how the temperature affects when an electrical current crosses somedifferent materials. Two methods, which have two different devices, are used to get our results: The first method is called Martensa. We want to check the resistance to the temperature of the threebars of epoxy resin with mica. The second method is called Vicat. We want to check the resistance to an electrical current of the three different materials (PVC, thermoplastic and cross linkedpolyethylene).

2. DESCRIPTION: MARTENSA METHOD: It is a device like an oven in which there is one tray. This tray contains three supports for our bars. In each of thesupports are adjustable weights with a scale of mm3. In the first place, we measured each rod of epoxy resin with mica particles. We need its width and height to calculate what weight is necessary putin the adjustable bar of the tray. When each rod is in the supports of the tray and we have regulated the weight for each rod, then we introduce the tray in the machine and turn on. If some LED is on,we have to move the contact at the end of the bar which contains the adjustable weight (6 mm). When the rod of resin deforms the contact is closed and the LED lights. If it is all right we push thestart button and wait about 5-10 minutes. One of the L.E.D. lights and we have to check the temperature at that time. In the same way with the other rods.

VICAT METHOD: In this test, the machine issimilar than Martensa machine. In this case, we use circular pieces approximately 10 mm in diameter and a few mm. high. There are three materials: PVC, thermoplastic and cross linked polyethylene, eachone with a different colour. Inside the machine there are three vertical supports with a thin rod which each is nailed on the material. Later, we regulate the needles which measure the millimeters,...
