- Thermodynamics: branch of science devoted to the study of the energy that systems have due to their temperature, any transformations that energy undergoes, and its practical applications.
-system: a collection of matter of interest under certain conditions
• Open: allow matter to cross boundaries
• Closed: don’t allow matter to cross boundaries
• Insulated: do not allow heat tocross their boundaries
- temperature: an indication of the degree of molecular activity of a collection of matter
-thermodynamic properties: features of characteristics of any piece of matter thatparticipate in a thermal process
• Intensive: their values don’t depend on the amount of matter in the system
• Extensive: their values do depend on the amount of matter in the system-thermodynamic state: it is the set of values of thermodynamic properties of a system of interest
-thermodynamic process: series of events that a system of interest may experience in moving from one stateto a different one
-thermodynamic path: series of states that characterize a system of interest when transitioning from one initial state to a final state
-thermodynamic cycle: a closed pathdescribed by a system that visits the same states over and over
-pressure: force per unit area exerted by or upon a system of interest
• Atmospheric: the one exerted by the molecules that make up theatmosphere upon everything that exists within it
• Absolute: sum of local pressure in a system of interest at a point and the value of atmospheric pressure
• Gage: local pressure at a pointin a system of interest without considering atmospheric pressure
-work: an energy interaction that takes place across those boundaries of a system. Though which there is no mass exchange, it is dueto a gradient in an intensive property other than temperature
-work interactions: system of interest does work on its surroundings or the surroundings do work on the system on interest
