Website password systems

Passwords are used on websites to authenticate users and are usually maintained on the Web server, meaning the browser on a remote system sends a password to the server by HTTP POST, the server checks the password and sends back the relevant content or anaccess denied message. This process eliminates the possibility of local reverse engineering as the code used to authenticate the password does not reside on the local machine. Transmission of the password, via the browser, in plaintext means it can be intercepted along its journey to the server. Many web authentication systems use SSL to establish an encrypted session between the browser and theserver, and is usually the underlying meaning of claims to have a "secure Web site".

We have trend to imagine that any technology introduces psychological substantial changes. Nevertheless, not always it is like that: a series of changes that during decades were assume tothe press, as now we know, they were spread by the press but they had his origin in changes much subtler that they preceded him, and that were not properly technological changes: the changes that gave place to this " grammar of the legibility " (according to Parkes's happy expression), to this vision of the textualidad that today us turns out to be familiar (a text com title and clearly visibleauthor to the beginning, com numbered pages, com index, com division in chapters, sections and paragraphs, com a numerical or alphabetical classification, com letters extended to indicate beginning r qualifications, com a punctuation that helps the reader to find the external and internal limits of certain part of the argumentative speech). The technology that allowed the silent reading, the rapidsearch and the citation is previous to the press. But the press introduced a total and complete change in a crucial aspect: the idea of copy of the same text. Before the press, the idea of identical copies of the same text was never the reached ideal one. After the press, it turned into a banality.
