The Outsider
When two individual begin a family, they teach their children different ways to have a successful life. Value is one of the most fundamental settings to be part of those people whoexceed in life. A person born in a different country or state could have many difficulties adapting to a new environment where the language, belief, and behavior are different. I was born in Mexicowhere values and believes are much different than American values. Since my mom is a single mother, she tries her best to implement good values onto my lifestyle. As i grew older and matured, I realizedthat my mother was right about certain values. Language, culture, and privacy are some of the different values between Mexico and the United States
Language is an obstacle to effective interculturalcommunication when people do not read, write, and speak the same language. WhenI first came into the United States, my first problem was communicating with others in English. In Mexico I was nevertaught how to read, write or speak in English. As a result, I felt like an outsider in a new country. It was also very difficult for me to find employment due to my language barrier. After strugglingfor a few weeks, I was developing anxiety and a powerless feeling. Therefore, I decided to enroll in an ESL class at Pacoima Skill Center. I took classes for one year and I learned the basics of ESL.Unfortunately, it was very difficult for me to manage my work schedule with school schedule so I stopped attending the ESL classes. Even though I did not finish the entire ESL program, I was able tospeak a few words and understand some of them, but it was not enough to succeed in this country. After a short break, I enrolled into the ESL classes offered at Los Angeles Mission College. My currentoccupation is a waiter/bartender and I feel much more confident speaking English with my customers, coworkers and friends.
