Neoliberalism has transformed the nature of the policies in the countries of the global north and south. It has accelerated policy decisions and promotes market integration. At the same time the opening of the globe has increased competition and individualism among people and countries; the globalization has increased inequality between nations, and increased human poverty. All over the globe welive a moral crisis. All groups are being dominated by this machinery that is irresistible because capitalism is growing every day; in people minds, in their behavior, we are all part of it.
Neoliberalism promotes the expansion of trade and exports; this is the economic model that currently several countries in the global north and south have adopted because the results yielded in the UnitedStates.
Countries have strengthened their international treaties to facilitate trade between countries; the neoliberal globalization has opened markets and Globalization itself. The Global north has entered several markets in the south and has impacted their local economy. The idea is to unify the economy where all countries contribute with something, whether raw materials, labor or technology toobtain solid growth.
In the case of Jamaica in the life and debt movie we can see as the global north has affected the economy of Jamaica, and instead of supporting their growth it has slowed down its development; while the idea of sharing resources globally with a common goal, it is appealing in many cases such as Jamaica it seems that only a small number of people benefits. Jamaica's localeconomy has suffered irreparable consequences; the small industry is not being able to compete with larger corporation; such as the banana business, where companies have reduced local production; this situation has also affected workers who lose their jobs due to reductions in staff. It is a reality that foreign companies in Jamaica rather than help progress have reduced the opportunities for thepopulation; and enslave its citizens.
After the people in Jamaica decided to flight back and protest in American companies where they were being exploited; the company simply brought foreign worker to fill the places of their protesters. It seems like they were no another course of action for the Jamaican; it was either lose their job and continue in the poverty; or accept the miserable conditionsoffered by American companies. At the end, the companies’ response was to close down the factories and simply move the production to other county.
In Kempadoo’s article; women took their personal choice to trade their bodies’ for money but the economical market was being affected for illegal activities; the global North mostly EEUU tends to be implicated in all decision where its own interest isexposed. The illegal market and labor affects the economy; and mostly because profits are not being controlled by either the state or the private sector. Even in the Grain’s articles; it is another example where our lives are being influenced by a small group of people. This elite people take decisions in our places; and don’t measure the possible consequences for future generations.
(McNallyDavid, Pg. 127). The accumulation by dispossession has been the key to keep and feed the capitalism system. The global south has been affected in a negative way; economically, many countries in the south haven’t able to meet the required payment to pay off their debts to the IMF and World Bank. Borrowing for countries is the south has becoming an endless cycle; the more countries borrowed the moreunrealistic is to pay their debts. These countries basically only pay part of the interest and are being forced to continue restructuring their debts with the IMF. Countries are obligated to sell their own resources to make payments; the IMF after reviewing the conditions find ways to have payments done. The global south loses their own resources because it is enforced to privatize any industry...
