AUC : Authentication Center
The AUC generates all authentication and ciphering triplets
(for GSM) / quintets (for WCDMA) used to authenticate the mobile subscribers at
radio access and to achieve speech security (ciphering). HLR has an interface to the
AUC for the triplet / quintet handling.
B NODE : B Node
The B Node is the radio equipmentthat transmits and receives information over the air interface to communicate with UEs.
BGW: Billing Gateway
This Node processes the charging of the network
BSC: Base Station Controller
The BSC manages all the radio-related functions of a GSM network. It is a high capacity switch that provides functions such as MS handover, radio channel assignment and the collection of cellconfiguration data
BTS : Base Transceiver Station
The BTS controls the radio interface to the MS
CAS : Customer Administration System
EGPRS : Enhanced GPRS
EMA : Ericsson Multi Activation
The EMA provides a high abstraction level of the physical network and a single point of entry for the customer care system.
EIR : Equipment Identity Register
The EIR is a database which containsthe hardware identity of mobile equipment.
FNR : Flexible Numbering Register
The FNR is the Ericsson solution that provides flexible allocation of MSISDN and Number Portability between GSM networks, WCDMA networks, GSM-WCDMA networks, PDC-WCDMA networks and TDMA-GSM networks.
GGSN : Gateway GPRS support Node
The GGSN provides the interface towards external data networks.
GMSC :Gateway Mobile Services Switching Centre
The GMSC is the point in the PLMN where calls to mobile subscribers
enter the mobile telephony network. It has the function for retrieving information from the HLR where the mobile subscriber is located. Furthermore the GMSC has functions to reroute the call to the MSC where the mobile resides according to the information received during interrogation. Therefore each terminating call to a GSM network is routed via GMSC.
GPRS : General Packet Radio Service
GSM : Global System for Mobile Communication
HLR : Home Location Register
The HLR is the database where the GSM and WCDMA mobile subscribers, of a certain PLMN, have their subscriptions. It stores and maintains the subscriber data (location of the subscriber, categories, authentication triplets, basic and supplementary service data, etc.).
HSDPA: High Speed Data Packet Access
ILR : International Location Register
Is similar to an HLR, but for several standards ( GSM – AMPS – TDMA )
ME : Mobile Equipment
MGW : Media Gateway
The MGW switches the circuit and packet-mode calls and manipulates the network resources as instructed by the MSC-Server.
MM : MultiMediation
The MM collects billing information or Call Data Records ( CDRs ) from network elements ( mainly MSC, SGSN ) and forwards them to the post processing systems.
MMS : Multimedia Message Service
The MMS makes it possible for mobile users to send multimedia messages to other mobile or email users
MS : Mobile Station
MSC : Mobile Services Switching Centre
The MSC performs thetelephony switching functions for the mobile network. It controls calls and records the charging and statistics data.
MSC-SERVER : Mobile Services Switching Centre - Server
The MSC-Server is used for call set-up, call control and release of the call. In order to set-up the call the MSC-Server will select and control an MGW (or several MGWs).
NMC : Network Management Center
Centralizedcontrol of a network is done at NMC
OMC : Operation and Maintenance center
The OMC monitors and controls a variety of parameters of the nodes to which are connected.
OSS-RC : Operation and Support System – Remote Centre
The OSS-RC monitors , controls and updates all the nodes of a network.
PCU : Packet Control Unit
The PCU multiplexes and schedules GPRS users onto multiple channels....
