Similar Companies and Different Information Systems
INTRODUCTION The differences in the information systems in similar companies could respond to different causes that are necessary toinvestigate. Mainly the differences can be rooted in features of the companies under analysis and in the advance of information technology and the changes that these advances can produce in the way the managers manage the firms. In spite of this I am going to analyse the different causes separately but we must realise that these causes can be present simultaneously in the companies at the sametime In order to identify and characterise the causes or reasons that induce similar companies to have different information systems I will define similar companies as two profit organizations, situated in the same geographic location (facing the same external environment), competing in the same market and attending similar of the customers. Despite the fact that these companies are competing insimilar situations, there are some factors that provoke differences in the way these companies deal with the requirements of their daily needs of information as far as differences in the way they face the tactical and strategic issues within them. I define these factors as the styles of direction and the strategy adopted by the firm to compete, the organizational structure, the organizational size,the vision of the CEO or managers in the firm and the stage of growth of information systems in the company. It is not the intention of this essay to identify which information system applies more appropriately in each situation the company faces. Instead the purpose is to highlight the importance of those factors I defined above when we are analysing and comparing the information systems of similarcompanies. It is important to note that in this essay I will analyse only a single loop, in other words, how the enumerated factors can affect the information systems of similar companies. However, we must realise that information systems also affect the business strategy, the size, the structure, etc. In this last case we must need a double loop analysis, underlying the concept of permanentinteraction that produces modifications continuously between the information systems and the other factors of the organisation. Finally we must take into account that the nature of the information systems demands a consideration from a variety of perspectives - a mix of the social, the organisational and the technological perspectives (Avgerou and Cornford, 1998). In this essay I will emphasise in theorganisational and technical perspectives. It is necessary to look at all the aspects revised in this paper when we analyse the information systems of a company because variations in these aspects could produce as a consequence variations in the information systems of the company. There are different causes relating to the state of the Information systems in a company. We can cluster these causesinto two main groups. The first group is going to gather those causes that are related to the business and business strategy while the second group is going to gather those causes related to the information systems in the company.
