We all know how the movie Narnia starts. Edmund staring out at the night lighted by the air raids. C.S.Lewis, creator of all the Narnia books was inspired by the despair of all theBritish children at times of war. Like the Pevensies, kids had to leave their homes to seek safety. Who was behind all this? The Germans. What provoked the Germans? It’s a long story.
OnSeptember 1,1939, Hitler ordered an invasion of Poland. Two days later, Great Britain and France declared war on the Germans. Other nations joined the Allies. World War|| had begun .Over the next six years,more then 70 nations would be involved in war.
The Germans fought hard and fast. They used planes and tanks. They called this type of fighting blitzkrieg. Blitzkrieg is German word for “lightningwar” In only a few weeks, Poland surrendered. Hitler then turned west.
Then a series of nations fell to Hitler, the list includes Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Norway. Francebuilt its defenses along a strip of land called Maginot Line. But the Germans flew over it or just went around the line. France fell to the Germans in June of 1940.
Next Hitler aimed for GreatBritain. The bombing campaign against London and other cities in England was called The Blitz, which most probably came from the word Blitzkrieg. It lasted from September of 1940 through May of 1941.The first German attack on London actually occurred by accident. On the night of August 24, 1940, Luftwaffe bombers aiming for military targets on the outskirts of London drifted off course and insteaddropped their bombs on the center of London destroying several homes and killing civilians. Amid the public outrage that followed, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, believing it was a deliberateattack, ordered Berlin to be bombed the next evening.
