The movie “Sleepers” is about revenge and redemption, and how, in America's darkest social corridors and back alleys, the two canbe inextricably linked. It's also a condemnation of a criminal justice system that allows innocence to be callously destroyed. There's little thrill in watching the vengeance extracted by theprotagonists of this film because “Sleepers” approaches its subject with a conscience.
The movie’s central theme shows four childhood friends who grew up in Hell's Kitchen, New York City. During thistime, the local priest, Father Bobby Carillo, plays a very important part in their lives. On a summer day in 1967, their routine takes a sharp turn when they almost kill a man after pulling a prank ona hot dog vendor. As punishment, they are all sentenced to serve time at the Wilkinson Home for Boys. There, the boys are systematically beaten, abused, and raped by the prison guards. These traumaticevents change the boys and their friendship forever.
Fourteen years later, two of the friends now turned gangsters, John and Tommy, decide to take justice into their own hands and kill one ofthe guards. Here begins one of the moral conflicts of the movie “Sleepers”. Kant’s perspective emphasizes that a person is praised or blamed for their actions based on the intentions with which theyact.  In other words, the person's motives are the major factor in determining whether that action is moral. By this standard, the action committed by the two gangster’s friends is immoral. Although theguard deserved to be punished for all the atrocities that he committed years earlier, the authorities were responsible for enforcing the law. The actions of the two friends should be condemned andnot praised because they were based on anger and revenge.
