Song of Extinction
The title of the play is Song of Extinction and the playwright was EM Lewis. Theplay was a bout a teenage boy, named Max Forrestal who played the violin and wrote music. His mother was dyeing of cancer and his father was trying to deal with his mother illness by attempting tosave a rain forest in Bolivia. While the young man was coping with his mother’s cancer, the father on the other hand was trying to save a certain bug in this special forest, because the bug containedanti cancer properties. The theme in this play was tragicomedy, because it inspired agitation, frustration, it dealt with a serious topic, but on the other hand it provoked laughter. The main charterswere: Khim Phan, Max Forrestal, Ellery Forrestal, Lily Forrestal, Dr. Joshua Dorsey and Gill Morris. The action took place in many areas, for example Max’s apartment, school, the hospital, the noodleshop and in front of a bus stop in the rain. There are many time gaps in between, because the action unfolds early in the day, but ends around the day afternoon.
Furthermore, I feel that the playwrightwas trying to tell a story, a story about a teen named Max Forrestal, and how he was depressed about his mother dyeing of cancer. I also feel, the playwright was trying to link Max and the Biologyteacher, Khim Phan together. For example, in the play the biology teacher wanted to give examples of his life to Max, also when the teacher felt sorry for him and took him to a noodle shop. This playhad 1 scene and 26 acts. It created a clear introduction, inciting event, turning point and wonderful resolution. The play flowed very naturally, and it did not feel forced or rushed. The dialogueallowed me to know different characters, as well as the time and place.
