Mrs.Brightside
It all ended one Christmas Eve, walking in the park by the river.
- I only love you as a friend, Rose.
While these sad words went around her mind, she couldn’t think of anything to do or say. Walking by her side was the only person that she had ever loved in her short fifteen years of life, her only best friend, her only boyfriend. No, he wasn’t her boyfriend anymore. Now hewas her ex. By the time she realized she needed to answer him, she noticed that she couldn’t say anything without hurting him, and after several minutes in silence she couldn’t come up with anything. She could never think of insulting him, and crying wasn’t an option. She was in complete despair.
While she looked at the floor with a dumb gaze, like if she was hypnotized, she couldn’t tell him howmuch she loved him, how much it hurt, or how much she wanted to hate him or forget him. With those seven words the only person that knew her completely had broken her heart in a million pieces. And still she loved him. And still she forgave him. Not even then she would tell him how sad she was or show him in any way. She knew that would make him feel guilty. So she swallowed her tears, hersadness, her pride and her love. And then she smiled.
- I already knew it, Robert-
-Forgive me, Rose-
She kept smiling.
-You don’t have to ask for forgiveness. It doesn’t really matters. Does it?-
He didn’t say anything else, knowing that if he asked something to her, he would open Pandora’s Box. She knew it too. And the only think she could do was to wait until it was time to go home.Unfortunately for her, they had just arrived.
Usually, she would have loved the sweet breeze coming from the river, the smell of the flowers that would fall like snow from the big trees that kept the sunlight from reaching the ground, and the nice cold wind that was always surrounding the park. But that day she couldn’t enjoy any of those things. Not the sound of the birds singing, not even the laughsof the children playing, none of the little things where she found any beauty could bring back the color to her life. Now everything was black and white, except the man that was walking by her side.
So, what happens to a girl’s heart when the only person that makes it happy is the one that makes it cry?
It dies.
-Rose, are you angry?-
No, actually I’m really sad
-No silly, why should I be?--No, I was just asking…-
Dummy…
They kept walking through the park until they reached the Little Hill, the city’s most important touristic point, mostly because of the old lighthouse that had been standing there for a few hundred years.
Walking to the top of the hill was really hard for Rose. She had walked up to the top several times before, but for some reason she was extremely tiredbefore she reached the step number 100 in the staircase to reach the top. He offered her to carry her bag, that looked really heavy, but she completely refused to accept any more help from that man. Instead she sat in a bench near them to catch her breath.
He sat by her side and put her arm around her, bringing Rose to his chest.
-What are you doing Robert?
-Well, hugging you, Rose
-Don’t.
Beforehe could even reply, Rose quickly separated from his embrace and started walking again without waiting for him. He caught up with her really quickly.
She tried to get some distraction with the view around her. A lot of children would play cheerfully around the houses of the hill, singing Christmas carols and waiting impatiently for the time to gather around the Christmas tree and open thepresents, and the cats that would lay in the ground to get some warm sunlight. They were getting near to the top of the mountain by the time the sky was starting to get orange.
In front of their eyes there was a beautiful sight, almost the whole city in all of its entangled splendor, and just by the other side, the great river that was starting to give them a freezing breeze.
She wanted to think...
