Strategies
Chapter 3: Housing and Property
PART 1
Strategy A
* Use the pictures to identify physical relationships.
* Look at the pictures carefully and ask yourself where an object is in relation to another object or person.
Strategy B
* Be aware of answer choices that are irrelevant. The TOEIC test often uses answer choices that are not relevant to thephoto.
PART 2
Strategy A
* Listen for questions that ask what to identify things
What is the man looking at?
What is the problem with the building?
What does the woman have in her hands?
What delayed the construction?
Strategy B
* Listen for questions that ask for the status of a situation.
The status indicates whether something is finished, being worked on, postponed forgotten, etc.PART 3
Strategy A
* Use the questions and answers to identify a recommendation or a suggestion.
Look for words such as recommend, suggest or should and could.
Strategy B
* Look for questions that ask to identify a request.
* Look for questions that begin with what. Make sure you choose the request for the correct speaker.
PART 4
Strategy A
* Use the questions and answers tofocus on a problem and the reason for the problem. Look for questions that begin with why and what. Read the questions and answer choices quickly to identify the information that you need.
Strategy B
* Use the questions and answers to identify solutions to problem. Solutions generally come after the problem has been identified.
PART 5
Strategy A
* Look at the sentence to identify thecause of a problem and its effect.
Strategy B
* Identify the verbs in the sentence end mark S if they are stative or NS if they are non-stative. Stative verbs usually do not take the progressive form.
PART 6
Strategy A
* In the TOEIC test, you may see answer choices witch contain a gerund or an infinitive. Ask yourself witch is required. Some verbs are followed by a gerund, while others arefollowed by an infinitive. Yet others may be followed by either.
Strategy B
* Use the commas and conjunctions in the passage to help you complete the sentence. If you find a series of phrases in the sentence, such as a group of nouns, prepositional phrases, or verbs, you will need the same part of speech to complete the sentence.
PART 7
Strategy A
* Use the questions and answers tofocus on the target audience.
* Read the questions and answer choices before you read the passage. Practice asking yourself “Who is reading this?”
Strategy B
* Read the answer choices and passage quickly to look for adjectives and details to identify an event or an activity.
Strategy C
* One of the questions in the double passage set may ask you to identify a difference in time. Readthe questions and answer choices quickly. Look for questions about time and decide if you will need information from both passages to answer the question. These questions usually begin with when.

PART 1
Strategy A:
* Use the pictures to identify a situation.
* Ask yourself who is doing what, where.
Strategy B:
* Be aware of similar sounds. The TOEIC test oftenuses similar sounding words to confuse you.
* Note the similar sounding words in these examples.
PART 2
Strategy A:
* Listen for questions beginning with what time; when and how(often) for indications of time.
Strategy B
* Listen for time markers in yes/no questions.
* A time marker is any word that helps you determine when an action occurs.
PART 3
Strategy A:
* Use thequestions and answers to guess the topic of conversation.
* Look for questions that begin with what.
Strategy B:
* Use the questions and answer choices to limit the possible reasons for an action.
PART 4
Strategy A:
* Use the questions and answers to focus on the speaker and the audience of the talks.
* Look for questions that begin with who.
