Name: Flores García Maricela Group: 603 - A
1Location: In London, England. It is housed in St. Stephen'sTower, at the northern end of the Houses of 2Parliament, in the London borough of Westminster.
3At the time of its construction, 1854, the movement of the Great Clock was much larger than any clockthen in 4existence and still is among the largest mechanical clocks in the world. Big Ben is possibly London's most 5famous landmark, standing 320 feet high and weighing approximately 13-ton, is the bellwhich sounds the 6hours, It is 9 feet in diameter, 7 feet 6 inches high; The bell was named after a popular heavyweight boxer 7Benjamin Hall.
8The clock itself is actually called The Great Clock ofWestminster and it was first heard across London on 31st 9May, 1859. The dials and hands of the clock were also much larger than those of any other in existence. Such 10large hands, at a height ofabout 200 feet, have to work against very strong winds and may be covered in 11freezing snow. Even birds may consider them an attractive perch and the clock has been slowed by birds in 12the past. Before the construction of Big Ben there was no satisfactory method of preventing the influences of 13the hands being fed back through the movement and affecting the amplitude of the pendulum's swing, and14hence the timekeeping of the clock. Denison's genius produced the double three-legged gravity 15escapement which served to isolate the pendulum from all external influences and made the clock famous16for its accuracy. Indeed, the striking of Big Ben is still broadcast live by the BBC as a time signal.
17Despite the movement's apparent complexity, it can be conveniently considered as being inthree distinct 18sections or 'trains', each powered by their own driving weight:
