This thematic unit is based on the topic “the social networks” which cut across the subjects “Language Arts” and “Computer Science”. The main goal is to get students appreciate the positive side of social networks as they improve other skills in the subjects.
Theme: The Social Networks
Scenario: A bilingual school
Level of Proficiency: Advanced
Course: Third year-HighschoolLength of time: 2 months
Classes of Language Arts: 6 hours per week
Classes of Computer Science: 3 hours per week
The Social Network Movie
The Social Network is a 2010 drama film about the founding of the Internet social networking website Facebook.
It is a story about two friends, one a computer genius, the other a business expert, who began a website that became the fastest growingphenomenon in internet history.
The main purpose for students to watch it is to introduce the topic, work on non-fiction elements and connect the topic with a real life situation they all have once experienced.
Language Arts Activities:
Warm-up: Students will watch the trailer of the movie “The Social Network” and based on that they will predict what the movie would be about. In pairs,students will identify:
• The main issue
• The characters’ styles of life
• The scenario
1. In groups, students will compare/contrast life before and after the social networks were created. They will answer the following questions:
• How was life before social networks were invented? Mention the most relevant changes.
