Dorothea Orem nació en Baltimore, Maryland en el año 1914, y seeducó con las Hijas de la Caridad de San Vicente de Paúl. Inicio su carrera profesional en la Escuela de Enfermería del Providencial Hospital, de Washington D.C. donde obtuvo el diploma de enfermería a principios de la década de 1930. Continuó después su formación y consiguió el B.S.N. de The Catholic University of America en 1939 y el MS en educación de enfermería por esta misma universidad en1945.

En el desempeño de su profesión trabajo como enfermera privada, enfermera hospitalaria y ejército la docencia. Desde 1940-1949 fue directora de la escuela de enfermería y del departamento de enfermería del Province Hospital de Detroit. Tras abandonar esta ciudad, pasó siete años (1949-1957) en Indiana, donde trabajó en División de servicios Hospitalarios e Institucionales del Board of...
