APOSTROFE: [‘] Indica contracciones y posesiones.
MOSTRAR OMISION DE LETRAS: una contracción es una palabra en la cual una o más letras han sido omitidas, el apostrofo muestra esta omisión.EJEMPLO:
* I AM → I´M
* YOU ARE RIGHT → YOU´RE RIGHT
* DID NOT → DIDN´T
FORMAR PLURAL DE LETRAS MINUSCULAS: Para formar el plural de una minúscula tiene que colocar ´s después de la letra. Nohay necesidad de apostrofo indicando un plural en letras mayúsculas, símbolos, números .Pero algunos profesores lo prefieren.
EJEMPLO:
* PPP / THREE P’S

* IN THE 199Os/ IN THE 1990’S
ALGO PARA RECORDAR/NO USAR APOSTROFOS: Los apostrofos NO deben usarse con pronombres posesivos o sustantivos en plural como: [HIS, ITS, HER, OURS, YOURS, MY] ya que estos ya contienenla posesión.
EJEMPLO:
* INCORRECT: his´ book
* CORRECT: his book
* INCORRECT: a friend of yours´
* CORRECT: a friend of yours
* INCORRECT: the group made it´s decision
*CORRECT: the group made its decision
CASO POSESIVO: Los gramaticos suelen llamar terminación de posesivo a la terminación ´s la cual indica posesión, trasmite la idea de que algo pertenece a alguien.EJEMPLO:
* THAT IS LUIGI´S RESTAURANT
* THE PARTY IS AT MARIELA´S HOUSE
* I LOVE THE GRANDMA´S RECIPES
REGLAS PRACTICAS:
Para saber si necesitas hacer un posesivo, invierte la frase yconviértela en una frase del tipo "of the...". Por ejemplo: |
* the boy's hat   >>  the hat of the boy  * three days' journey   >>  journey of three days |
Si el sustantivo que lesigue a "of" es un edificio, un objeto o un mueble, entonces, no necesitas apóstrofo. Observa: |
* room of the hotel   >>  hotel room  * door of the car   >>  car door * leg of thetable   >>  table leg |
