THE MONA LISA SMILE (2003)
“Katherine Watson didn´t came to Wellesley to fit in. She came because she wanted to make a difference”. And actually she did, however director of “The Mona Lisa Smile”(Mike Newell) did not surprise the spectator with a memorable movie.
The film was released in 2003. Its launch generated high expectations since it was known that Julia Robers (Katherine Watson)earned 25 millon US for her performance (which was the highest ever earned by an actress at that time). Along with her, the movie starring Kirsten Durst, Julia Stiles and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
The story, setin 1953, is a about and art history teacher, Katherine Watson. She takes a position as a professor at Wellesley College (a conservative and prestigious art institution located in Massachusetts).There, she will find that the students are not interested in their academic growth but getting married and having kids. While she tries to persuade the young students about what success means, Katherinewill have problems with some girls and directives al Wellesley because of her liberal ideas about women´s roles.
Although the topic related with women´s rol in society is still interesting and valid,the story of a teacher who wants to change and inspire her o his students life is not new. Remember, for example, “Dangerous Minds” (1995), in which LouAnn Johnson after getting a job as a teacher atParkmont High School in California, she finds herself confronted with a classroom of kids with severe social problems and no interest in education. She decides to take her students attention withkarate lessons and then, she uses Bob Dylan lyrics to introduce poetry to her pupils. However, her methods are criticized by the school authorities.
On the other hand, the music of “The Mona LisaSmile” was entrusted to several well-known artists such as: Tori Amos, Celine Dion, Mandy Moore and Rachel Portman; the result was a beautiful and sensitive soundtrack that makes the spectator feels what...
