The Overhead Proyector
An overhead projector is a verybasicbutreliableform of projector. The overhead projectordisplaysimagesonto a screenorwall. Itconsists of a large box containing a cooling fanand anextremelybright light, with a longarm extended aboveit. At theend of thearmis a mirrorthatcatches and redirectsthe light towardsthescreen.
An overhead projector can beusedtoenlargeimagesontothescreenorwallforaudiencestoview. Transparencies can be placed ontothe projector to be viewedbyboththeaudience and the speaker. The overhead projector was once a commonfeature in bothclassrooms andbusinessmeetings. Recently, it has seen a decline in use, as more sophisticatedcomputerbasedprojectors are favored.
The overhead projector wasfirstseenduringWorldWar II. Itwasused as atooltotrainlargenumbers of servicemen. In the 1950s and 60s, itcrossedoverintotheclassroom as aneducationaltool, and thenintothebusinessworld as a training tool.

ON THE FIRST DAY OFCLASS,passoutclearoverhead-projectorsheetstoeachstudent. Allowstudentstoselect a pen color and instructthemtowrite as muchaboutthemselves as they can in theforeignlanguagewithoutmentioningtheirname. Ifnecessary, offerprompts andquestionstohelpthemrememberkeyphrases and tenses.
Allowthestudents 10 to 15 minutes towrite, thencollectthesheets. Onebyone, numbereachsheet and place theitontheoverheadprojector. Assign a studentto try toreaditaloud....
