The Road to Guantanamo Essay
Our enemies have made the mistake that America’s enemies always make. They saw liberty and thought they saw weakness. And now, they see defeat. (Bush). This essay will talk about Shafiq, Ruhel, Asif and Zahid, 4 guys that lived at England and decided to travel to Pakistan, supposedly to attend their friend’s wedding, and ended up trying to go to Afghanistan werethey were accused of being members of Al Qaeda and translated to Guantanamo in Cuba. They decided to make this voyage near the date of the catastrophic accident in New York well known as 9/11. Are they terrorist or did they actually had innocent motivations to attend to this trip at this dates? This essay will show my personal interpretation of this movie based in some experiences and will questionif this 4 guys were innocent or not, if the movie should be considered a documentary, if the world should be aware of this situations and finally the violations on the Geneva Convection and what the actual president of the United States of America is doing.
We all know that what happened with the Tween Towers in 2001 was a big shot to the American’s ego, pride and patriotism, and therefore theyshow documentaries, news and videos every year on its anniversary in the schools, me personally lived it the two years of my staying in Texas. Off course the true responsible for this act knew this was going to happen because of its impact not only in USA but in the world, that’s why as my teacher of 6th semester Machelly said, many proclaimed this act because it was a victory and a showing ofpower and braveness that many wanted the world to know that they were the ones that hurt the most powerful nation in the world, and off course this nation wasn’t going to leave the papers under the table, they were going to fight whoever did it, and the only group that declare it and was listen to was Al Qaeda.
“Al-Qaeda is an international terrorist organization lead by Osama Bin Laden inAfghanistan and was created with the objective of defeating the Soviet Union and establishes a pan-Islamic caliphate in the world. Then in 1998 their objective changed by adding the duty of all Muslims to kill US citizens and their allies and immediately after 2001 USA began a war in Afghanistan to destroy their bases and the Talibans.” (Global Security). After reading this background of the story ofAfghanistan and knowing what this meant to the Americans, only a full or a terrorist will take a vocational trip to Afghanistan when they had no necessity because they were save at home in England. I throatily believe that these guys were terrorists because I see no other reason for them to be fighting to the wedding of their friend at Pakistan and besides is the wedding was at Pakistan, what werethey trying to do by crossing the border to Afghanistan? There are so many facts that can prove to me that they were involved with Al-Qaeda, if their friend wanted so bad to get married, why did he found this date so romantic to get married? If he loved this girl and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, why didn’t he brought her to England were they could live save? He didn’t want to getmarried; he just wanted a reason for him and his friends to go over Pakistan.
The director of this movie is Michael Winterbottom and his movie was recorded as a fake documentary based in a true life story. This movie represents another prove of the injustice that exists in the world, and he makes the plot off course in the contradiction of USA by having nowadays more than 500 persons inGuantanamo that haven been judge and their constant defending of the liberty and human rights. In the textual meaning of a documentary you can’t consider “Road to Guantanamo” one of them because it does follows with the structure of a movie and it does shows a sequence of a story without having a narrator independent from the main characters that is narrating what is really going on and not...
