The Twin Towers were the centerpieces of the World Trade Center complex. The north tower was opened in Dec. 1970 and the south tower in Jan. 1972.Each of them had  110 stories each and  provided nearly 10-million-square feet of office space for about 35,000 people and 430 companies. They werethe tallest buildings in New York City, and for a little period of time they were the tallest buildings in the world. The North Tower was 1,368 feetand the South Tower stood 1,362-feet high. On a clear day, from the top of the towers you could see all New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut. The towers were massive. Each weighed more than 250,000 tons, contained 99 elevators and had 21,800 windows. Each floor was an acre in size.

Theyattracted roughly 70,000 tourists and commuters every day, approximately 50,000 people worked in the buildings, while another 20,000 visited orpassed through each day.

September 11, 2001
On the morning of September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four planes. Two were Boston-to-Los Angelesflights, which the hijackers diverted to New York City. At 8:45 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 was flown into the north tower of the World TradeCenter. Eighteen minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175 was flown into the south tower. The original destination was California so each planehad tons of fuel on board, which helped upon the impact, creating intense fireballs in both towers and weakening the structural integrity of each.
