How can I develop the character Sganarelle of the play A Doctor in spite of himself by Moliere, applying the concepts of the theory Towards a Poor Theatre by Grotowski and The Empty space by Brook?

Peter Brook:
Peter Brook is a very recognized English theatre and film director; he has been part of many important films like Romeo and Juliet, Love’s labour’s lost and Dr. Faustus, and has alwaysbeen influenced by very important characters in the theatre story like Jerzy Grotowski, Antonin Artaud, Joan Littlewood and many others.
Peter Brook did not specialize in one specific technique as many other dramatists did; he tried to develop many pre-existing techniques and convert them into a post-modern style.
For instance, Brook tried to break down the classic theatre conventions thateverybody knew about, which were based on a very schematic and single-pointed view way of making theatre. Brook was searching for something that people would have more connection with, that had a much more powerful style and that had more affecting styles. He referred to this classic theatre as a “Deadly Theatre”.
Brook also worked on another type of theatre called “Holy Theatre”, this kind oftheatre explored the spiritual and ritualistic style of the theatre’s nature. Together with this kind of theatre he also developed the “Rough Theatre” which is a very popular way of making theatre now a days but that is hardly recognized as “theatre” because of the lacking of art pretensions.
All these kind of theatres together are what he called The Empty space concept, one of his differenttechniques. As seen previously, Brook’s work with theatre was always based on other people techniques and on their complete development to create a new and different way of making theatre. Never the less, this was one of the things that led to his success as a director and to his many awards and honours.

Jerzy Grotowski:
Jerzy Grotowski was a very famous theatre director that had a major impact on thetheatrical industry and its later development. After he studied for becoming a theatrical theorist and director, he started his own theatre company where he was aiming to teach and to develop the experimental theatre.
Jerzy Grotowski is mainly known by his famous and polemical technique that states that the theatre should be a “poor theatre”. Many people think that the best plays and the besttheatre that can be made requires the use of many props, lights, a wide wardrobe and many other things, but Grotowski thought the opposite way.
Grotowski always believed in the “Holy theatre” just as Peter Brook did, he thought that the nature and pureness of the theatre should be by all means preserved and that nothing should alter it, because if it did then what was being presented could no longerbe called a theatre performance. Grotowski also believed that the theatre was a space for the spiritual communication to take place, the connection between the actor(s) with the audience would lead to a personal relief from the spectators. He also stated that the “Total theatre” should be abandoned, that instead of adding things to the theatrical performances, things should be removed so that thetheatre preserved its nature. Grotowski wanted to show that for making theatre the only things that were needed were the voice and body of the actor.
He thought that one of the things that affected this “theatre nature” was the use of props and lights, etc. So that for preserving the real theatre all those things must be eliminated. This position towards theatre making was called a “poor theatre”and was what Grotowski firmly believed in.
