Titanic Criticism

Titanic – “Nothing On Earth Could Come Between Them” is a Drama/Romance film released in 1997 produced by James Cameron winning 11 Oscar Prizes, 78 other awards and 48nominations. The main characters of the film are Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Caledon ‘Cal’ Hockley (Billy Zane). The movie Titanic is based on a real event thatoccurred on the 14th of April of 1912 and ended few hours later. The Titanic (RMS Titanic) was an Olympic class cruise owned by the White Star Line and was in that time described as the Unsinkable becauseof the lack of probabilities that it had to sink with the high technology it had. Although it had the latest technology, Titanic didn’t have enough boats for the maximum capacity of passengers whichlead to over 1500 deaths that night. The total cost of the movie was around 200 million dollars, making a total of 1.8 billion dollars worldwide.
The movie is about a first-class girl (Kate Winslet)aboard on the Titanic with her fiancé (Billy Zane) and about a third-class guy (Jack Dawson) who won a trip to the Titanic. Kate Winslet and Jack Dawson meet each other and are happy with their secretaffair until the ship hits an iceberg and they both have to struggle to survive. At last, Jack Dawson dies so that Rose DeWitt can get into a survivor boat and the whole movie is told 87 years afterthis event by her.
Since the movie Titanic is based on a real event, we may ask ourselves, how similar is this movie to what really happened with RMS Titanic in 1912? Was it originally made as adocumentary, or was it made for financial purposes? First of all, it is necessary to mention that Rose and Jack were fictional characters and so was their love story. If this movie was really a documentaryabout the real events of Titanic, then this love story wouldn’t have really been necessary.
