Roles of Men and Women
Around the late 1800´s people in the south of the United States strongly supported the idea of racism. This concept brought with it manyother ideas that involve the specific roles of each gender. Everyone had their own list of things to do for a day, but these things varied depending on the gender .As people grew up they were being taughtto do only gender related things and not others. Society pointed out each irregularity in behavior that was shown by each class of gender. This way the behaviors and gender were not contradicted.Aunt Alexandra from To Kill A Mockingbird showed specifically how women should behave and what they should do depending on the occasion. When she had free time she sewed while Atticus read things onhis free time. Aunt Alexandra showed us that women got together to have tea in nice dresses and talk about what was happening in town at the time like how black servants were behaving after TomRobinson´s trial. Housewives in the house are in charge of what kids should or should not do. For example, Aunt Alexandra never let Scout and Jem be friends with the Cunningham’s or black people because shethought they were people that were not on the same social class level. She believed that Scout and Jem should not mix with people like them.
On the other hand, Atticus showed his role of a man wherehe has the most talent, a man´s work. He worked as a lawyer and never got involved in how the children should act and what they should do. He does not let the decisions from work be influenced withAlexandra’s opinion. For example, Alexandra told Atticus he should not do the case of Tom, but he ignored her and took it anyway. Atticus shows his role as a man when a crazy dog was outside of hishouse and he shoot the dog. In that period of time women were not seen doing those kind of stuff, not even Calpurnia did it when she saw the dog first. Atticus was in charge of all the hard and...
