TOURETTE’S SYNDROME
What is the disease about?
* How and why the disease is gotten? Although the cause of Tourette syndrome is unknown, current research reveals the existence of abnormalities incertain brain regions (including the basal ganglia, frontal lobes and cerebral cortex), the circuits that interconnect these regions and neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine)that carry out communication between nerve cells. Given the often complex presentation of TS, the cause of the disorder is probably equally complex.
Symptoms
The tics are classified as simple orcomplex. The simple tics are sudden, brief and repetitive movements in which a certain amount of muscles are involved. Some of the common and simplest tics include blinking and other visual gestures, facialgrimaces, shoulder shrinking and head or shoulder shaking. The simplest vocalizations can include making throat sounds repeatedly, sniffing, groaning or even barking. The more complex tics arepatterns of specific movements that cover several groups of muscles. The complex motor tics can include facial movements combined with head twisting and shoulder shrinking. Other complex motor tics can seemdeliberate, including sniffing or object handling, jumping, hopping, bending down or crouching down. The more complex vocal tics include emiting suddenly words or phrases. Maybe the most dramaticones and that produce disability are the self-mutilant motor movements, such as hitting their own faces or tics that include coprolalia (to say dirty words) or ecolalia (repeat someone’s elses words orphrases).
What type of treatment must be followed?
There's no cure for Tourette syndrome. Treatment is to help control tics that hinder everyday activities and normal functioning. When tics arenot severe, treatment may not be necessary.
