PURPOSE
The purpose of this book is to present to those of interest information about Spiritual Palo Mayombe as practiced by the Montenegro Family of both Puerto Rico and Brazil.

INTRODUCTION
Within the complex Santeria Religion, there exists a dark side called Palo Mayombe. The individual's who practice this dark aspect are calledPaleros. Palo Mayombe has a long and historical history. Originating in the African Congo, the magic of Palo Mayombe was transplanted to the Caribbean during the Spanish slave trade to Puerto Rico and Cuba in the 1500's. The Caribbean was not the only region to experience the Palo Mayombe awakening. The influence of Palo Mayombe can also be found in Brazil, Central America and in the Vera Cruz regionof Mexico. Palo Mayombe in Brazil is referred to as Quimbanda. Quimbanda is a mixture of traditional Congo, Indigenous Indian and Latin American spiritualism. There is a sharp distinction between Palo Mayombe and Santeria. The religion of Santeria uses the forces of light. The initiated members of Palo Mayombe use the forces of darkness to achieve their goals and magical spells. Because Palerospractice extremely strong and powerful black magic, many practioners of Santeria avoid being associated with Palo Mayombe. Palo Mayombe has its own priesthood and set of rules and regulations.
