Family violence
Indicators of fatal and non-fatal injuries in the family environment are the manifestation of three welldifferentiated realities: one of them is either stigmatization or“delegitimization” of the use of force as a traditional
form of punishment or pedagogical resource; the other is the present response to new conflicts arising from
the transformation of the family nucleus inmetropolitan environments, and the third one is connected with
the impact of dynamic regional economic processes and “booms” on family ties, both between spouses
and among different members andrelatives.
In urban environments, changes in the family unit result from space divergences, in few words the
differentiation and distance between home and the workplace, this added to the ongoinginvolvement of
women in the occupational structure as well as the incorporation of young people in other socialization settings
(streets and schools), the absence of parents and new hierarchical roles amongsiblings. The conflicts brought
about by this transformation are associated with the exercise of authority and control over the family including
time, money and sex, the dynamics of marital relationsand of parents with their children. Other conflicting
factors are unwillingness to study or due to lack of resources or parental negligence, fights among siblings,
and parents’ dislike for theirchildren’s friends.
There are two different violence sources in regional settings, such as those relating to the use of force or
corporal punishment as a traditionally-consecrated pedagogical tool; onthe other hand, the impact of “booms”
and the conflicts they bring about in marital and family relations. In the first situation, child mistreatment or
abuse in provincial regions is often added tomarital violence, though not necessarily in all geographicallyidentified focal points. This exceptions lie in the specificity of the second setting, the “boom” zones, where
migration, uprooting...
