Washington D. C. is the capital of the United States of America and includes the so-called District of Columbia (abbreviated as "DC"), an entity other than the 50 states that make upthe nation. The city and district are located on the banks of the Potomac River and surrounded by the states of Virginia (west) and Maryland (north, east and south).
The city began as a plannedcity, and was developed in the late eighteenth century to serve as the permanent national capital, after several towns will hold the position since the country's independence in 1776, while thefederal district was formed to make the difference between the national capital and the states. The city was named after George Washington, first president of the United States.
