The author tries to explain nearly everything on what our, the western-style countries and their economies rely on. In my point of view he succeeded doing that: he gives an excellent overview aboutthe connections in our modernlife and how does it work. Even the use of weapons of mass-destruction and international conflict is part of his argumentation. These western-based system spread over theworld during the last centuries. He as well describes four fundamental challenges we are all confronted with: the environmental sustainability, the equity and justice challenge, the increasingmarginalization of people and culture and the worldview challenge.
He is critising the world of business and the dependence of our society on that. In that point I do agree with him because not onlydestroys the environment in the long run, but also prevents a self-determined life of the people. He claims for a fundamental change in our economic system and the way we have organized nearly everything inour consumer-based societies which are not working without economic growth which means the exploitation of natural resources. Furthermore he gives proposals and a exact guidance how to do it.
Todaynearly every country choose, at least in a formal way, a democratic system and a market based economically system: Therefore as Harman points out correctly we need both on the one side workers whoproduce the things with their workforce and on the other side consumers who use the products and spent their wages. So every adult citizen has a double role nowadays. But if we have only one role? Mainlythe one of consuming? A good question he points out is what is the society doing with people whose workforce is not needed for producing goods. Machines and robots are able to produce much faster andcheaper as man can do.
