-Greetings
First, I’m going to define what World War I was:
The World War I, also called the Great War, was a major war centered on Europe that began in the summer of 1914 and lasted until November 1918. It involved all of the world's great powers and more than 60 million military personnel were mobilized in one of the largest wars in history.
Now, let’s take a look at the antecedents:
1815:It all had started with the Holy Alliance between Prussia, Russia and Austria.
1873:
Then, the German Chancellor Bismark negotiated an association between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Russia.
1879:
The agreement was failed because Austria-Hungary and Russian could not agree over Balkan policy and that produced the formation of a strong ‘Dual Alliance’ between Germany and Austria-Hungary.1882:
This alliance was expanded to include Italy in what became the Triple Alliance.
1890:
The recently ascended German Emperor, Wilhelm II refused to renew the Reinsurance Treaty with Russia
1892:
The Franco-Russian Alliance was signed.
1904:
The United Kingdom confirmed an alliance with France
1907:
The Anglo-Russian Convention was signed between the United Kingdom and Russia whichformed the Triple Entente to counteract the force of the Triple Alliance.
1912 – 1913

The Bosnian Crisis in the Balkans produced the First Balkan War which was fought between the Balkan League (formed by Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece and Montenegro) and the Ottoman Empire which was shrunk by the Treaty of London in the end. One year later, Bulgaria attacked both Serbia and Greece to start the 33-daySecond Balkan War which destabilized the region.
1914
The heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Bosnian-Serb student. This began a period of diplomatic maneuvering between Austria-Hungary, Germany, Russia, France and Britain called the July Crisis. Afterwards, in the same year, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia after a series ofdemands; Germany declared war on Russia and the United Kingdom declared war after Germany invaded neutral Belgium.

Now, I’m going to show you the main characters in Great War:
The protagonists were assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies and the Central Powers.
Let’s start with the Allies:
They were France, United Kingdom, Russia, the United States, Italy (eventually), Japan, Belgium,Serbia, Romania, Greece, Portugal, Montenegro and Brazil.
Some of the main leaders were:
-Ferdinand Foch: He was the French Army general. He was recognized because of his excellent way of writing.
-Douglas ‘Butcher’ Haig: He was a British senior officer. He commanded the British Expeditionary Force during World War I.
-John ‘Black Jack’ Pershing: He was a general officer in the United States Armywho led the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I.
On the other side of the coin, the Central Powers were Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria.
The most outstanding leaders were:
-Wilhelm II: He was the last German Emperor. He also supported Austria in World War I.
-Count Franz Conrad: He was an Austrian soldier and Chief of the General Staff of theAustro-Hungarian Army in Great War.

These were the most important protagonists in World War I.
The most important things that happened after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and the declarations of war are summarized in this way:
After declaring war on Germany, the British Expeditionary Force crossed to France to stop the German advance where they were successful at the Battle of Mons and the Battle ofthe Marne.
A ‘race to the sea’ developed and this meant that huge trench systems took shape and defending was considerably easier than attacking.
The conflict soon truly became a ‘world war’ when Japan was allied to the Entente forces, the Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers and the conflict expanded to Africa and South America.
Like previous continental battles, the confrontation was...
